It’s the Little Things That Matter Most
Recently one of our residents, Norma, was sharing with Heather, Director of Healthcare, a story about one of her favorite former students. She felt like she had really touched this young man and made a difference in his life. She always wondered what became of him. Norma told Heather his name and Heather remembered it. As Heather was relaying the story to Kathy, LPN and Memory Support Director, Kathy wondered if it was the same person she was acquainted with? They also realized that the former student’s last name was one of our Medication Aide’s, Jennifer's maiden name. Jennifer thought the former student might be a cousin of hers so she began to do some investigating and so the plot begin to reunite Norma and her former student, if this was in fact him. Kathy asked her friend of the same name who his favorite teacher was? He immediately said Mrs. Penning! Now they knew they had found the former student. After checking with Norma’s daughter to make sure it would be okay to surprise her with a reunion, they arranged for the former student to surprise Norma. When asked when he could come, he said how about tomorrow?
When the former student arrived, Heather went to bring Norma down to the office area. When Norma entered the office, the former student asked “can you teach me to read and write Mrs. Penning?” It took her a few seconds to realize who it was but not long! Norma was pleasantly surprised and happy to see that her former student was doing good. Norma beams when she talks about teaching and said she really feels like she made the biggest impact when she taught. Norma is working on her memoir and loves to share her love of teaching. Her husband, Harvey was also a teacher and Principal through the years. From what we have been told, he was a wonderful teacher as well!
This truly was a Surprise and Delight moment that became a team effort to brighten Norma’s day, and surely brightened the former student’s day as well!
