The Value of Independent Living Activities

Every day in independent living is an opportunity to embrace the things you love (without daily chores) and discover new passions along the way. Activities are at the center of this lifestyle, giving residents a chance to connect, stay curious, and find fulfillment. Both the evidence and our hearts tell us that this is the right way to age beautifully.

What Are Independent Living Activities?

Independent living communities provide a wide range of activities to meet residents where they are, offering something for every interest and energy level. Some examples from Heritage Communities:

  • Fitness classes like yoga, tai chi, cardio, and therabands
  • Live music (many of our communities have it weekly!)
  • Social events, from happy hours to community dinners
  • Outdoor activities and trips around town
  • Support for individual hobbies and passion projects

Who Decides What Happens Every Day?

Independent living is all about… independence! Residents in these communities live at their own pace – there are many activities available throughout every day, which anyone is free to join or pass. At Heritage, everything is put together by our Life Enrichment Directors, who are full-time fun and engagement makers.

The Life Enrichment Director (LED) at a community will publish a monthly and a weekly calendar with 7-8 activities every day! It’s a mix of core activities that happen regularly and new things to try. Check out an example calendar here!

Why Do They Matter?

Staying engaged and living life to its fullest is about more than simply “staying busy.” A steady schedule of independent living activities and worry-free free time provides:

  • Social Connections: Building friendships that enrich daily life.
  • Mental Stimulation: Exploring new skills or interests to keep your mind sharp.
  • Emotional Fulfillment: Finding joy and purpose in doing what you love.
  • Physical Vitality: Staying active with wellness-focused opportunities.

Our goal is to create an environment where you’re not just living – you’re thriving.

How a Connected Community Enhances the Experience

We know life doesn’t always follow a straight path, and your needs may evolve over time. That’s why many Heritage Communities offer independent living, assisted living, and memory care all under one roof. This approach ensures you can embrace every day with confidence, knowing the future is taken care of.

A Place to Call Home, No Matter What

Our continuum of care is designed to provide stability and peace of mind. Here’s what it means for you:

  • Seamless Transitions: If your care needs change, you can move to a different level of care without leaving the community you know and love.
  • Familiar Faces: Build lasting relationships with neighbors and staff who will be there for you, no matter what the future holds.
  • Comfort and Confidence: Say goodbye to the stress of multiple moves and focus on what matters—living each day to its fullest.

Couples Staying Together

For couples, the ability to stay together is priceless. Imagine one spouse thriving in independent living while the other receives additional support in assisted living. They can still share meals, participate in activities, and enjoy life side by side, all within the same caring community. It’s about honoring the relationships that matter most while providing the care each individual deserves.

Independent Living Activities in a Continuum of Care Community

One of the unique advantages of our connected communities with all types of care is how we bring people together through activities. Whether you’re in independent living, assisted living, or memory care, you’re part of one vibrant community where shared experiences are celebrated.

Activities for Every Ability

Our passionate Life Enrichment Directors design Heritage activities calendars to be inclusive and meaningful, ensuring everyone can participate in their own way:

  • Group fitness classes with modifications to suit all mobility levels. Riley, LED at The Heritage at Shalimar Gardens, says she has up to 20 people in exercise class every day, doing everything from free weights to cardio.
  • Happy hours and shared events for socializing – get-togethers let everyone engage at their level, with no pressure.
  • Puzzling and games (such as a giant crossword puzzle on the wall) that get quite competitive.

Riley, Life Enrichment Director at The Heritage at Shalimar Gardens, raves about the drama club that residents there have started. “We go all out, they create the plays, cast each other as actors and actresses, publish a playbill, everything!”

Real-Life Moments of Joy

Here’s how our activities create lasting memories:

  • A resident in independent living shares their love of reading in a book club that includes neighbors from assisted living, sparking thoughtful conversations.
  • A family bonds over a collaborative art class, where a loved one in memory care paints alongside relatives from independent living.
  • A morning walk group forms friendships that grow stronger with every lap around the garden paths.

Here, these moments are more than just events – they’re connections that make life richer and more meaningful.

Example Activities Calendar

Curious about what that actually looks like? Here’s a peek at just a couple of weeks on the assisted and independent living activities calendar at a Heritage Community. This busy schedule is supported by even more on an additional memory care activities calendar, too. Every resident, regardless of care or living arrangements, can participate as much or as little as they like.

The Bigger Picture: Peace of Mind for You and Your Family

We understand that choosing a community isn’t just about today – it’s about planning for tomorrow. That’s why our continuum-of-care approach benefits both residents and their families.

For Residents

Independent living offers freedom to focus on what truly matters. You can explore activities, build relationships, and enjoy every day without worrying about what’s next. These 5 benefits sum up the experience nicely

  1. More Freedom: With home maintenance, housekeeping, dining, transportation, and planned activities handled for you, independent living lets you focus on enjoying life instead of managing daily responsibilities.
  2. More Connection: Independent living makes it easy to stay social with a calendar full of activities, clubs, outings, and inviting spaces to connect with neighbors or host family and friends.
  3. Renewed Purpose: In independent living, opportunities for education, volunteering, hobbies, and new pursuits provide meaningful ways to stay engaged and fulfilled.
  4. Convenience: From dining options to fitness, libraries, and more, independent living offers everything you need just steps from your door.
  5. Peace of Mind in Independent Living: With access to health services, built-in safety features, and seamless transitions to higher levels of care if needed, independent living offers comfort and security for the future.

For Families

We recognize the emotional weight of helping a loved one make these decisions. In our communities, families find reassurance and trust in knowing their loved one is living a daily life that prioritizes care, connection, and continuity.

  • Ease of Mind: With all levels of care under one roof, your loved one can stay in familiar surroundings even if their needs change, minimizing disruptions.
  • Consistent Care: Our staff builds meaningful relationships with residents, providing personalized support at every stage of their journey.
  • Shared Joy: Families can join in community events and celebrations, creating cherished memories alongside their loved ones.
