It’s almost time for your move to senior living! With so much going on, you want to be sure your arrival in your new home is pleasant and stress-free. Here’s a quick look at what to have in your “open first” boxes, as well as how to make moving day a breeze.

Preparing for a move to senior living

Designate a few boxes for “open first” and consider adding the following:

  • Comfort items. Rest is so important, especially when you’re making a big move. Pack your bed sheets, and bedspread, and be sure to add a favorite blanket and pillow(s). You’ll be so glad you have a soft place to rest your head!
  • Personal care. Think about your grooming regimen. Bring a toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush and comb. Gentlemen will want to include their shaving kits, ladies most likely their cosmetics and whatever other items are used each morning. Remember several bath towels, hand towels and wash cloths.
  • Clothing. Keep comfort in mind when making a move to senior living. Bring clothing that’s easy to take on and off, and that makes you feel casual and relaxed. Rubber-soled shoes are a good idea. Also don’t forget undergarments, pajamas, socks, robe and slippers. Include a light sweater or jacket as well.
  • Favorites. Bring along your favorite snacks, music, a magazine or the bestseller you’re reading for downtime in the evening.
  • Essentials. Don’t forget your bedside lamp, a clock, a few disposable cups, plates and bowls and eating utensils, napkins and paper towels. Ask your community for a list of what they will provide as well for your move to senior living.

Your move to senior living: you’ve arrived!

The first few days of any grand adventure can be tough… remember first grade? But keep in mind how far you’ve come, and what lies ahead: peace of mind, convenience, fun and friends. So much to look forward to!

In the beginning… Finding your feet is your first goal. Set up your space so you can start feeling at home right away. As you begin to get things in the right place, you’ll start to feel it all coming together, and you’ll be ready to welcome new neighbors and friends.

Your first meal is a milestone. You may already be familiar with the community’s dining venues, but the first time you eat as a new resident, it might feel different. Invite a friend or family member to join you or eat with your new neighbors so you can start feeling at home.

As you settle in… Connect with your neighbors by inviting a few over for coffee or cocktails. Most likely, your new community will pair you with resident ambassadors who can give you the scoop on activities, events, and daily life. Invite them over or join them for a few meals. Pick their brains about what helped them make the transition when they made the move to senior living.

Now that you’re home… Scan that activities calendar every morning and pick at least one new thing to try. See what feels right for you. Drop in a discussion group or exercise class. Go for an early morning walk and say hello to those you pass. Volunteer to help set up an event. The more you participate you the more you’ll feel part of your new neighborhood of friends.

And above all, relax! You’ve done it! You’re given yourself a gift of freedom, lifelong learning, companionship, inspiration and more. Making the move to senior living can open the doors to endless possibilities. As we like to say at Heritage Communities, we redefine living better. You make it your own!

It’s all in place to put a smile on your face. That’s what living better feels like. Download our free guide, The Family Decision Toolkit. Or contact us today to learn more or schedule a tour.
