Frequently Asked Questions in Grand Island, NE

The Heritage at Sagewood

Frequently Asked Questions

Moving a loved one into senior living is a significant financial decision, and it is essential to assess your financial situation and how you plan on covering the costs before moving in. In general, many seniors will dip into their retirement savings and inheritances to cover the expenses associated with senior living communities. Additionally, some funding can be obtained from selling your loved one’s primary place of residence.

Long-term care insurance can help offset senior care costs, including in-home care, nursing homes, and assisted living communities like The Heritage at Sagewood. You should double-check to see if your loved one has long-term care insurance and if your loved one’s life insurance policy includes any benefits for long-term care. Additionally, veterans and spouses may have  Aid and Attendance benefits.

During the first two years of assisted living residency, The Heritage at Sagewood only accepts private payment sources, including private funds, long-term care insurance, and veterans aid and assistance benefits. We only accept these forms of payment for memory care, regardless of length of stay. For additional advice, see our guide on funding senior living!

While The Heritage at Sagewood offers assisted living and memory care services under the same roof, the two categories of care are distinguished by the severity of cognitive impairment and the level of support required by an individual in their daily routine. Assisted living is geared toward independent seniors who need aid to complete specific activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, eating, medication management, transportation, walking, and using the restroom. Our team will meet with your loved one to assess their needs and develop a thorough, personalized care plan before moving in.

Our memory care services are directly tailored toward individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. All our associates are trained in a special Montessori-inspired method of dementia care that seeks to preserve your loved one’s independence while also reducing any frustration or challenges they may encounter. Our memory care communities are comfortable and secure, giving you peace of mind that your family member is in a safe space.

There may come a time when you need to transition your loved one from assisted living into memory care. See this article for advice on how to go about this process.

There is no easy answer to this, and choosing to move a friend or family member into long-term care is not a decision that comes lightly. Ultimately, you should want what is best for your loved one and yourself, and admitting this can initially feel selfish. For everyone involved to thrive, you need to prioritize the support needs of your loved one as much as your well-being. If you find yourself sacrificing personal and professional goals to fulfill your duties as a caregiver, it may be time to find an assisted living community.

Any apprehension your loved one may be experiencing at the prospect of moving into senior living is understandable, as finding the care they need involves leaving behind their home and daily lifestyle. At The Heritage at Sagewood, we do everything we can to preserve our residents’ routines and provide a comfortable environment that feels like home, erasing any preoccupations they may have had about what senior living means. See our guide on deciding between home and senior living for helpful pros and cons, cost comparisons, and real testimonials from our residents as you begin this decision-making process.
